Roughly 200 prospects braved the heat to showcease their skills in from the the Nebraska coaching staff in their second Friday Night Lights camp of the month.

They did so in front of roughly 500 Huskers fans and parents that were in the stands inside Memorial Stadium. HuskerOnline.com was on hand to witness the competition and where plenty of things caught our attention.

Mapieu earns offer, commits to Huskers

There was a lot of good talent at Nebraska’s second Friday Night Light’s camp, but most eyes were on 2018 defensive tackle Masry Mapieu of York, Neb.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Mapieu had landed offers from Iowa, Iowa State and UCLA since the summer started to go along with South Dakota State and UCF which offered in the spring. Tonight, the Huskers saw enough of the rising junior to throw their hat into the ring.

From my perspective, Mapieu landed his offer based off of how he projects. He performed well tonight, but I wouldn’t say that he was flat out dominant. He is still a very raw player in pretty much every aspect. However, you see glimpses of what he can become in the way that he moves in his massive frame that is still maturing and it just doesn’t make sense to drag your feet on offering.

It will be very interesting to see how much Mapieu progresses over his next two years of high school football.

2019 wide receiver Williams proves himself, again

There was an abundance of talent at Nebraska’s satellite camp in St. Louis at the beginning of the month, especially in the 2018 and 2019 classes.

Two of the top standouts at that camp were 2019 St. Louis (Mo.) Vianney receivers Cam Coleman and Kyren Williams. Coleman landed an offer from the Huskers the following night while Williams was asked to come attend the Friday Night Lights camp.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Williams did just that and was arguably the top receiver at the camp and it would not come as a surprise if the Huskers became the first to offer very soon. Williams has impressive speed and hands, but what really separates him from others is his route-running ability. He routinely beat defenders on short and deep routes alike and made some very impressive catches on difficult balls.

Williams drew a lot of praise from NU wideouts coach Keith Williams and the two spoke for an extended period of time after the camp was over.

Another in-state defenisve lineman opens eyes

While most eyes may have initially been on Mapieu, another in-state defensive tackle quickly grabbed some attention during 1-on-1’s.

Bryson Williams is a 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive tackle out of Lincoln Southeast that clearly put himself on the map tonight. The 2018 prospect carries his weight extremely well and is quick and explosive off of the ball. He easily won the majority of his reps on the night. He appears to be a player that is poised to have a breakout junior season for the Knights.

Quick hits

***2018 Nebraska tight end commit Cameron Jurgens of Beatrice may be committed to the Huskers for almost a year now, but opted to workout tonight anyway. Jurgens was one of the more physically impressive players at the camp and had an impressive night despite going through a period where he dropped some passes.

***There were a handful of offensive linemen that performed well tonight. 2018 Des Moines (Iowa) Dowling Catholic guard Zach Ross was impressive during the 1-on-1 session as was big Huskers 2018 target Will Farniok of Sioux Falls (S.D.) Washington. In-state offensive linemen that stood out included 2017 center Peter Gehrls of Creighton Prep, Trent Hixson of Skutt Catholic and Hunter Miller of Cross County.

***2017 King Mills (Ohio) Kings defensive end Dan Sichterman, the brother of Huskers OL commit Matt Sichterman had a solid showing Friday night. He proved to be extremely quick off the edge and has added roughly 30-pounds of muscle since last season and was impressive on the night.

***There were a handful of impressive quarterbacks at the camp including 2017 Wahoo (Neb.) Bishop Neumann’s Noah Vedral and 2019 St. Louis (Mo.) CBC quarterback Brett Gabbert.

***2017 Lincoln Southwest linebacker Tyler Burgason was a standout at the Skill Positions camp on Tuesday and once again looked to be one of the best overall linebackers at the camp tonight.

***2018 Elkhorn (Neb.) South athlete Moses Bryant primarily plays running back for the Storm, but worked out at wide receiver last summer and took his turn working out at corner this year. It’s hard to say exactly where he projects best right now, but there’s no question his speed will generate a lot of looks.

***2017 Cibolo (Texas) Steele athlete Trai Armstrong, the younger brother of Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong once again worked out for NU tonight at running back and full back.

***Both South Dakota head coach Bob Nielson and Assistant head coach Brian Mohnsen worked Friday’s camp as guest coaches, as did Iowa Western offensive line coach Dane Wardenburg. Omaha North head coach Larry Martin also worked Friday night’s camp as a guest coach.
