Alex Lewis’ long and complicated football journey reached its brightest point yet on Saturday, as the Nebraska left tackle was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 130th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Lewis becomes the third Husker to be drafted, joining defensive tackles Maliek Collins (Dallas Cowboys) and Vincent Valentine (New England Patriots), who were selected in the third round on Friday night.

A two-year starter on the Huskers’ offensive line who was voted a team captain last season, Lewis was named second-team All-Big Ten by the league’s coaches and third-team by the media for his play in 2015.

The 6-foot-6, 312-pound native of Tempe, Ariz., then went on to post an impressive showing at the NFL Combine in February, which clearly caught the eyes of teams around the NFL, including the Ravens.

Baltimore also selected an offensive tackle with the sixth overall pick in the first round in Notre Dame's Ronnie Staley, but head coach John Harbaugh said Lewis would definitely have the opportunity to make an immediate impact this season.

"The good thing about those two guys is they're both going to be versatile players," Harbaugh said during an interview on the NFL Network. "Both of them can play left tackle, they both played left tackle in college. They both can play left guard. They both could play right tackle if we wanted to put them there... We like versatile linemen, guys that can bend, who can think, who are smart and can react quickly. We're going to throw the ball out there, find the five best guys and let them compete. May the best man win."

But Lewis’ antics off the field made him a controversial figure within Husker Nation.

Lewis initially signed with Colorado in 2011 and played in 12 games with three starts as a true freshman. As a sophomore in 2012, Lewis started all 12 games for the Buffaloes at left guard and earned honorable-mention All-America honors after allowing just two sacks all season.

That’s when things went south for Lewis, though. In May of 2013, he was arrested for assaulting an Air Force cadet and received a 45-day jail sentence and two years' probation in exchange for dropping the felony counts.

He eventually transferred to NU in the spring of 2013 and redshirted that season, and he quickly moved up the depth chart to become the starting left tackle for the next 26 games.

However, Lewis was again the center of attention for the wrong reasons early last season, when he blasted Nebraska fans on social media the night following the Huskers' loss at Miami.

A few weeks later after Nebraska’s loss at Illinois, Lewis was seen blowing kisses to Husker fans who traveled to the game while yelling, “Sorry we suck!” as he walked off the field.

Lewis would not conduct another media interview from that point on, leaving some unresolved issues between he and the Husker fan base.

NFL scouts noted their concerns over Lewis’ temper, with one scout telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that his “character concerns are legitimate. At times they bleed onto the field with dumb penalties.”

That said, another scout quoted in the same story wasn’t nearly as concerned. Clearly, neither were the Ravens.

He’s a physical dude,” the second scout said. “He had an issue and I think he’s over it. He’s worthwhile.”
